Gas

What to do if you smell natural gas

Follow the utility's emergency steps first; do not delay leaving to operate a valve.

If you suspect a natural gas leak, leave the area first. Do not delay to look for the source or operate a valve.

Follow FortisBC’s instructions

If you smell rotten eggs or hear escaping gas, stop what you are doing. Do not use a phone inside, operate electrical switches, smoke, light a flame or create another ignition source. Go outside, leaving the door open behind you. Once outside, call FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line at 1-800-663-9911, or call 911.

Do not remain in the building to find or turn a gas valve. Leave inspection and any further action to the utility and qualified responders.

After the immediate danger

When the site is safe and the utility has advised what is needed, our gas service team can discuss repair or appliance work within the appropriate scope.

Know the sequence before an incident

The important preparation is knowing who to call from a safe place. Save FortisBC’s emergency number, 1-800-663-9911, and make sure household members know to leave immediately if they suspect a leak. Do not use a phone or switch while still inside. Do not re-enter just to shut off an appliance or gather belongings.

This page is about a suspected leak, not a routine appliance shutoff. After the utility has responded, a qualified gas contractor can explain any repairs and when service can resume. If the issue is a water leak with no gas concern, use our plumbing emergency steps instead.
