Hot water

What affects the cost of replacing a water heater?

The installation details that matter more than an old advertised replacement price.

A water-heater quote includes more than the appliance. The type of heater, capacity, access and work needed to make the installation suitable all affect the final price.

Compare like with like

Ask whether a quote includes removal of the old unit, the new heater, required fittings, venting or electrical work, permits where applicable, and disposal. Replacing a tank with a similar model may be a different project from converting to tankless or changing fuel type.

Ask for a quote based on your heater and the work your home needs. Confirm the full scope and price before work begins.

Prepare for a useful conversation

Photograph the existing unit and its rating label. Note any leak, shortage of hot water, access limitation or planned renovation. Our water-heater team can use those details to discuss suitable replacement options.

Ask what happens on installation day

The quote should identify the selected model and capacity, where it will be installed, and which existing connections can be reused. It should also say who handles any required permit or electrical work, whether the old heater is removed, and what happens if hidden conditions change the scope. Compare warranty terms for the equipment with any labour coverage stated by the installer.

If you are considering a conversion to tankless, ask for a separate explanation of the vent, fuel or power, condensate and service-access changes. That makes a tank quote and a tankless quote easier to compare. Our tankless cost guide focuses on those differences. No online list can replace a home-specific scope when the existing installation is unknown.
