Practical ways to use home heating efficiently

Comfort and maintenance questions for a hydronic heating system.

A comfortable home depends on both the heating equipment and the building around it. Before changing a boiler setting, look for simple factors affecting how heat reaches each room.

Let heat circulate

Keep furniture and stored items from blocking radiators or heating outlets. Check that windows and doors close properly, and use curtains in a way that suits the season and time of day. A programmable control can help some homes, but large changes should fit the heating system and the household’s routine.

If one room is consistently cold, note whether the problem began after a renovation or control change. A boiler or hydronic system may need service, but insulation or airflow may also be part of the picture.

Maintain the equipment

Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and record new noises or fault codes. Our boiler and heating service can assess an equipment concern; no single tip guarantees a particular bill saving.

Adjust controls with the system in mind

A quick thermostat setback may work differently in a slow-response in-floor system than in a home with faster heating. Natural Resources Canada notes that some hydronic systems respond slowly. Before making a large schedule change, learn which control governs each zone and observe whether the home still reaches a comfortable temperature when needed.

Compare energy use over similar weather periods rather than one bill alone. If equipment cycles unusually, a room stays cold, or a fault code appears, record the pattern and arrange a check. Upgrading a thermostat is not a substitute for repairing a heating fault, and a boiler change should follow an assessment of the entire system.
