Hot water

Considering a Navien tankless water heater?

Questions to ask about sizing, installation and service before choosing a specific model.

Navien is one of several brands homeowners may encounter while comparing tankless water heaters. The right choice is not a brand name alone; it is a model that fits the household’s hot-water demand and the home’s installation requirements.

Compare the whole system

Ask how much hot water the unit can deliver at the incoming water temperature in your area. Check how it will vent, whether the gas and water connections are suitable, and where condensate will drain if the model produces it. A compact unit still needs room for service access.

Features, warranty terms and model availability can change. Confirm the current manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model rather than relying on a general efficiency claim.

Plan for service

Ask what maintenance the selected model requires and who will handle it. If you already have a Navien unit that is showing an error or losing hot water, record the model and code before you call. We can discuss tankless water-heater service for your home.

Compare the exact model, not only the brand

Two units from the same manufacturer can have different output, venting and service requirements. Request the current specification sheet and installation manual for the proposed model. Check its hot-water capacity at the expected temperature rise, the warranty conditions, and the space needed to access serviceable parts. Ask which installation changes are included in the quote.

Navien publishes model-specific manuals and documents. Use the documentation for the exact unit being considered; a general product description cannot confirm whether it fits a particular home. If you are comparing brands, ask each contractor to explain the same sizing and installation assumptions.

For an existing unit, an error code can narrow the service conversation, but it does not by itself prove which part has failed. Avoid opening the casing or changing gas and vent connections yourself. See our guide to intermittent cold water for useful observations to pass on.
