Hot water

Water heater trouble: the signs to note before you call

A practical checklist for describing hot-water loss, leaks, noises, and inconsistent temperature.

“No hot water” can describe several different problems. The water might be completely cold, warm but not hot enough, or hot at first and then run out quickly. A few observations can make the first conversation more useful and help the team prepare for the right type of visit.

Describe the change

When did the problem start? Is it affecting every tap or only one fixture? Does the water temperature change during use, or is it consistently low? If the problem happens only at one faucet or shower, mention that. The fixture itself may be part of the issue.

For a tankless unit, note any displayed error message without opening the equipment. For a tank, look for visible moisture around the base or nearby connections. You do not need to diagnose the unit; clear observations are enough.

Have the basics ready

If it is easy to read safely, record the make and model from the unit’s label, its approximate age, and whether it is a tank or tankless system. Let the team know whether it uses gas or electricity. A photo of the label and a wider photo showing access and surrounding space can help with a replacement discussion.

Do not remove covers or attempt gas, electrical, or venting repairs yourself. If water is actively leaking, keep clear of electrical equipment and use a safe shutoff if you know where it is. For a gas odour, leave the area and follow your utility’s emergency guidance.

Repair or replacement?

The answer depends on what has failed, the unit’s condition, and the installation. The symptoms alone cannot establish whether a repair is sensible. Our water heater page explains the tank, tankless, and power-vented work the team can discuss. Call or contact us with the details you have; the options can be reviewed after assessment.
