Choosing a comfortable toilet height

What to compare when standard and chair-height toilets feel different, and how to measure the seat you already use.

Toilet height affects how comfortably people can sit down and stand up. If you are replacing a toilet, the most useful starting point is the one you already use: what feels right about it, and what would you change?

Measure the seat you use now

Measure from the finished floor to the top of the toilet seat. Product descriptions sometimes quote bowl height without a seat, so check what the number includes before comparing models. A chair-height model generally has a higher seat than a standard-height model, but the exact height varies by product.

If possible, try a few heights in a showroom. Feet should rest comfortably on the floor, and sitting down and standing up should feel steady. A higher seat may help some adults, while a lower seat may suit shorter users or children better.

Think about everyone using the bathroom

For a shared bathroom, consider who uses it most often. If accessibility is a priority, talk through the person’s needs and any mobility advice they have received instead of choosing a model from a label alone. Seat height is only one part of the decision; grab bars, clear floor space, and the room layout can matter too.

Confirm the fit before ordering

Height does not tell you whether a toilet will fit the plumbing or the room. Check the rough-in measurement, bowl shape, and clearances around the vanity and door. Our toilet service team can help you plan a replacement that suits the space.
