Plumbing basics

Bathroom plumbing checks you can do safely

How to spot a running toilet, slow drain or early leak without dismantling fixtures.

A bathroom check is mostly about noticing what has changed. Persistent water sounds, soft flooring and slow drainage deserve attention even if the fixture still works.

Watch the toilet

If the toilet refills when nobody has flushed it, there may be a leak between the tank and bowl. You can place a few drops of food colouring in the tank, wait without flushing, and see whether the colour appears in the bowl. This is a clue, not a full diagnosis. Know where the toilet’s supply shutoff is in case it overflows.

Watch the shower and sink

Catch hair before it enters the drain. Check under the vanity for dampness and look for water escaping around the shower. Do not flush wipes or other products simply because a package calls them flushable.

If water is leaking or a drain repeatedly blocks, our plumbing repair service can assess the cause.

Check the room as well as the fixtures

Look at the base of the toilet, the cabinet floor and the area just outside the shower after use. Water on the floor may come from splashing, a failed seal or a plumbing connection; note exactly when it appears. A soft floor or damp wall needs attention even if the shower and sink still seem to work.

Keep the toilet supply valve accessible, but do not force a valve that resists turning or begins to leak. If a drain is slow, notice whether only that fixture is affected or whether water rises in another one. Our shower-habits guide covers drain strainers and water escaping the enclosure. These observations can be done without taking apart a fixture or opening a wall.
