Five habits that can strain home plumbing

Common drain and fixture habits that are easy to change.

Many plumbing problems begin with ordinary routines. Small changes can help protect drains and make leaks easier to notice.

  1. Pouring grease down the sink. Collect cooled fat and oil for disposal instead of letting it coat the drain.
  2. Flushing wipes and other solids. Toilet paper and human waste are the safer standard for a household toilet.
  3. Treating a disposal as a rubbish bin. Follow the appliance instructions and keep large, fibrous scraps out.
  4. Relying on chemical drain cleaners. Repeated treatment can mask a recurring blockage and may complicate later repair.
  5. Ignoring a small leak. Damp cabinets or a toilet that keeps refilling are worth checking before more water is lost.

These habits cannot prevent every problem. If the same drain keeps clogging, or you see water where it should not be, describe the pattern when you contact our team.

Make the habit match the fixture

For kitchen sinks, Metro Vancouver says fats, oils and grease can harden in pipes and cause clogs. At the toilet, its wipes guidance says to put wipes in the garbage even if the package calls them flushable. At showers, a removable hair strainer can catch material before it reaches the waste line. These are small routines, not treatments for an existing blockage.

If a pipe repeatedly backs up, note which fixtures are affected and whether water returns from another drain. Our clogged-drain guide explains when the pattern suggests a larger problem. For leaks, a photo and the time the water appears can help a technician identify the source without guesswork.
