Plumbing basics

A simple kitchen plumbing check

Easy observations that help you catch drips and drain trouble early.

You do not need to take the sink apart to keep an eye on its plumbing. A quick visual check can catch small changes before they damage the cabinet.

Look below and around the sink

Check the floor of the cabinet and the visible supply and drain connections for dampness. Run the tap briefly and see whether any joint drips. Notice whether the sink drains more slowly than it used to or whether water appears when the dishwasher runs.

Use a drain strainer and keep cooking fat out of the sink. If a blockage returns after clearing, it may need a closer look. Tell a plumber what products have already gone into the drain.

Deal with leaks promptly

A towel can contain a slow drip temporarily, but the cause still needs attention. Photograph where the water appears and contact the team for help with a leak or recurring kitchen-drain issue.

Note which activity triggers water

Dry the cabinet base, then observe it while the faucet runs, the sink drains and, separately, the dishwasher operates. Moisture that appears only during draining points to a different part of the system than a drip that continues with the tap off. Do not touch an electrical outlet or disposal wiring in a wet cabinet. Keep a clear path to any local supply valves, but do not force an old valve.

Scrape food into the appropriate bin and keep grease out of the drain. If the sink repeatedly slows or backs up, see our clogged-drain guide. If the cabinet gets wet, our under-sink leak guide can help you describe the timing and location before a repair visit.
