A familiar shortcut is not always kind to the plumbing behind the wall.
Myth: “Flushable” means safe for every drain
Wipes and similar products may not break down like toilet paper. Put them in the rubbish instead of assuming they will pass through a household or municipal system.
Myth: A chemical cleaner fixes every slow drain
It may not remove the cause of a recurring clog, and it can complicate later work. Tell the plumber if a chemical product has already been used.
Myth: Water drains in the opposite direction across the equator
The shape of the basin and the way water enters it matter far more in an ordinary sink or toilet.
Myth: Any wire can clear a drain
An improvised hanger can scratch fixtures or push an obstruction farther in. Use the right tool for a simple local clog, or ask our drain cleaning team to assess a persistent problem.
When the shortcut fails
If one fixture is slow, note whether the problem began suddenly or gradually. If several fixtures back up together, stop running water through them and arrange an assessment. A chemical product or improvised wire may make the next repair harder without reaching the true obstruction. Tell the technician what has already been tried.
Metro Vancouver’s wipes guidance is clear that wipes belong in the garbage even when labelled flushable. For kitchen sinks, its grease guidance explains how fats and oils build up in pipes. Our clogged-drain guide offers a safer way to decide when a simple local response is enough.
