Ways to reduce water waste at home

Find hidden losses and choose fixtures that suit the way your household uses water.

Saving water often starts with finding what is being lost already. A toilet that refills on its own or a tap that drips all night can be more useful to fix than replacing a working fixture for a small claimed saving.

Check for avoidable use

Look for dampness under sinks, listen for running toilets and pay attention to an unexplained change in the water bill. Use the water meter, if accessible, to understand whether water may be flowing when fixtures are off. Ask the utility how to interpret its readings.

When a fixture does need replacement, compare its current water-use rating and suitability for the room. A water-saving model still needs to work well for the household.

Consider monitoring

A smart shutoff may help identify unusual flow, but it cannot replace maintenance or a manual shutoff. Our plumbing repair team can help locate leaks and discuss practical upgrades.

Start with a baseline

Keep a note of normal household water use from your utility account, then compare similar periods if a bill changes. A higher bill can have several causes, so look for signs such as a running toilet or damp cabinet before deciding on a product to install. If you use a meter to check for unexpected flow, follow your water provider’s instructions for reading it.

When choosing a new faucet or toilet, compare the product’s water-use information with the way the household actually uses that room. Our toilet replacement guide covers fit and repair questions as well as efficiency. For leak alerts, see whether a smart shutoff could help; it cannot replace fixing a known leak.
