Plumbing basics

Simple plumbing maintenance at home

A short routine for spotting leaks and using fixtures without creating new problems.

The best homeowner maintenance is often observation. You can catch a drip or a slow drain without opening a wall or working on a gas appliance.

Do a regular walk-through

Look under sinks, behind accessible toilets and near the water heater for moisture. Notice a toilet that refills on its own, a drain that takes longer to empty, or a new stain on a ceiling. Know where the main water shutoff is and keep it accessible.

Use a suitable plunger for a minor local blockage, following the fixture and tool instructions. Avoid repeatedly adding chemicals to a drain that keeps clogging.

Leave equipment procedures to the manual

Water-heater flushing and other servicing vary by model and can involve hot water, pressure, gas or electricity. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and arrange qualified service where needed.

Our plumbing repair team can help when a change suggests a leak or recurring fault.

Keep the routine short and repeatable

Choose a regular time to look at accessible connections, fixture bases and the water heater. Note anything new rather than trying to diagnose it immediately: a damp patch, an unexplained refill from a toilet, a drain that empties more slowly or a change in hot-water output. A simple photo dated when the issue first appeared can make a later service conversation clearer.

Know where the main shutoff is and keep it accessible to other household members. If an active leak occurs, safety and stopping the water matter more than completing a checklist. Our emergency preparation guide covers that plan. Routine checks help you catch changes; they cannot guarantee a failure will not happen.
